How to get PUK for your Safaricom line (or another phone number)

In this post, I am going to show you how to get the PUK code for your Safaricom line.

The methods I am going to show you can also be used to get the PUK code for another Safaricom phone number / line.

The actions outlined in this post can be used on any Safaricom line. You can even ask your neighbour for their phone (if they use the Safaricom network) to start the process of retrieving the PUK code to unblock your SIM.

If your line is blocked, follow the methods below (on any Safaricom line) to get the PUK code for your blocked SIM.

Use Safaricom USSD short codes to get your PUK code – Dial *100# or *456#

You can use the *100# and *456# USSD short codes on your feature phone, smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer (if you are using your SIM card in a modem or router).

Here’s how:

  • Dial *100#
  • Select option 1: Self-service
  • Select option 3: Get PUK Number
  • ‘PLEASE ENTER THE MOBILE NUMBER OF THE LINE YOU WOULD LIKE TO GET THE PUK FOR’ e.g. 0704123456
  • Enter your ID Number e.g. 27456789
‘THE PUK REQUEST FOR MOBILE NUMBER 0704123456 HAS BEEN RECEIVED & IS BEING PROCESSED. YOU WILL RECEIVE A RESPONSE WITHIN 5 MINUTES’
You will then receive an SMS that reads as follows: ‘Dear Customer, Your PUK is 52029271. To unblock the line, Enter PUK, enter your current PIN or any 4 digits number as new PIN and Repeat same PIN. #Twaweza.’

OR

  • Dial *456#
  • Select option 8: Get PUK
  • ‘PLEASE ENTER THE MOBILE NUMBER OF THE LINE YOU WOULD LIKE TO GET THE PUK FOR’ e.g. 0704123456
  • Enter your ID Number e.g. 27456789
‘THE PUK REQUEST FOR MOBILE NUMBER 0704123456 HAS BEEN RECEIVED & IS BEING PROCESSED. YOU WILL RECEIVE A RESPONSE WITHIN 5 MINUTES’
Safaricom will then send you an SMS that is similar to this one: ‘Dear Customer, Your PUK is 52029271. To unblock the line, Enter PUK, enter your current PIN or any 4 digits number as new PIN and Repeat same PIN. #Twaweza.’

Get your PUK from the card your SIM card was attached to during purchase

Locate where you kept the card your SIM was attached to the first time you purchased / last time you replaced (upgraded) your line.

The card has your PIN 1, PIN 2, PUK 1, PUK 2, serial number, phone number / IMSI code.

Use the PUK 1 printed on the card to unblock your SIM.

What next after getting your PUK?

  1. Enter your blocked SIM card in your device.
  2. Key in the PUK code.
  3. Once the SIM is unblocked, enter a new PIN.
  4. Re-enter the PIN again.
  5. Continue using your line like you always do. Enjoy various voice, text and data services from the mobile service provider. Buy airtime and get yourself a Safaricom data bundle, text / SMS bundle or an All In One Bundle.
