Safaricom earn extra airtime: recommend bundles & get a commission

Have you heard of Safaricom earn extra airtime? The service that is more like an affiliate program – except you get paid in airtime (which by the way you can turn into cash / money in M-PESA using the various convert airtime to M-PESA services online)?

Well, right there on your Safaricom line, you can recommend various bundles to friends and family and earn a commission every time a person buys what you recommend to them.

In this article, I am going to show you how you can take advantage of this feature to make some extra airtime – which you can use to buy data bundles, Tunukiwa bundles, minutes or SMS bundles.

How to access the earn extra airtime affiliate program feature on your Safaricom line

There are several ways to access the Earn extra airtime feature on your line.

Below I show you how you can use three Safaricom USSD codes to do so.

  • Dial *544#
  • Select option 3: Normal Data Bundle with EXPIRY
  • Select option 1: All in One Bundle
  • Select option 7: Earn extra airtimeOR
  • Dial *544# on your feature phone, smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer (if using your SIM in a modem or router)
  • Select option 3: Normal Data Bundle with EXPIRY
  • Select option 4: 30 Day Bundle
  • Select option 6: Earn Extra Airtime

And here is how the menu looks like:

Earn Extra Airtime.
1: Recommend bundle
2: Check Commission
3: Opt out

The other two USSD shortcodes you can use to get to the menu are *100# and *456#.

  • Dial *100#
  • Select option 9: Buy
  • Select option 3: Normal Data Bundle with EXPIRY
  • Then either go with option 1 (All in One Bundle) -> 7 (Earn extra airtime)
    OR option 4 (30 Day Bundle) -> 6 (Earn Extra Airtime)

Using the 456 code:

What bundles can you recommend to earn extra airtime?

  1. KShs 1,000 (200 minutes + 4GB data + WhatsApp)
  2. KShs 1,000 (400 minutes + 1GB + WhatsApp)
  3. KShs 2,000 (600 minutes + 12GB + WhatsApp)
  4. KShs 2,000 (1000 minutes + 3GB + WhatsApp)

These are the bundles you can recommend to other Safaricom users and earn a commission when they buy.

To see the current list of bundles (because things change) you can recommend to others, simply follow the steps below:

  • Dial *544#
  • -Select option 3: Normal Data Bundle with EXPIRY
  • Select option 1: All in One Bundle
  • Select option 7: Earn extra airtime
  • Select option 1: Recommend bundle
  • Enter recipient’s phone number e.g. 0704123456
    And then you will be presented with a list of bundles you can recommend.

How to recommend a Safaricom bundle and earn extra airtime: Step-by-step

Let’s say you want to recommend the Kenya Shillings 1000 All in One Bundle (the one with 4GB) to a friend, here are the steps you will follow:

  • Dial *544#
  • Select option 3: Normal Data Bundle with EXPIRY
  • Select option 1: All in One Bundle
  • Select option 7: Earn extra airtime
  • Select option 1: Recommend bundle
  • Enter recipient’s phone number e.g. 0704123456 and press Send (replace this with their mobile number)
  • Select option 1: Kshs 1,000 (200mins+4GB+WhatsApp)
    And that’s all.
    You will see a notification (and also receive a text message from Safaricom) that looks like this: ‘Thank you for recommending a bundle to 254704123456. You will earn airtime if they buy the bundle in the next 48 hours.’

The recipient on the other hand will immediately receive a text message (from you) that looks like this: ‘Here’s a deal for you. For just 1K you get 200 mins + 4GB + WhatsApp! Dial *544*41# to try it out!‘

So, for you to earn extra airtime / earn a commission, all they have to do is dial *544*41# and purchase the bundle you recommended within 48 hours.

Outside that window and you won’t get anything.

Also if someone else has already recommended the same bundle and 48 hours have not elapsed (recommendation is pending), you will have to wait another day to make your recommendation – to your friend.

To check your Safaricom commissions, follow the steps below:

  • Dial *544#
  • Select option 3: Normal Data Bundle with EXPIRY
  • Select option 1: All in One Bundle
  • Select option 7: Earn extra airtime
  • Select option 2: Check Commission
    You will then be able to see your total recommendations and commission earned this week and last week.

To opt-out:

  • Dial *544#
  • Select option 3: Normal Data Bundle with EXPIRY
  • Select option 1: All in One Bundle
  • Select option 7: Earn extra airtime
  • Select option 3: Opt out
    And you will see this: ‘You have opted out successfully’
