Safaricom data bundles: How to stop auto renew / autorenewal

In this post I am going to show you some of the methods you can use to stop autorenewal of Safaricom data bundles.

Why use the Stop Autorenewal feature?

Sometimes when purchasing a data bundle you will find yourself selecting the Auto renew option instead of the Buy Once option.

Here is what that means for you:

If you buy a Daily Bundle – and select the Auto Renew option, you will be billed every 24 hours.

Say you buy the Kenya Shillings 5 (7 MB + 7 SMS) daily bundle, Safaricom will give you the same bundle every 24 hours and automatically deduct KSh 5 from your airtime balance.

However, if you use the Buy Once option when paying for the KSh 5 bundle, Safaricom will deduct KSh 5 from your airtime balance – just once.

They won’t bill you 24 hours. They won’t send you another 7 MB + 7 SMS every 24 hours.

Now, here is where some people make mistakes, especially when purchasing daily and weekly data bundles. Someone goes to the Data Bundles menu. Unsure of there data needs (and budget) for the coming few days / weeks, they buy a bundle and complete the transaction using the Auto Renew option (instead of Buy Once).

The first day / week they may be happy with Safaricom automatically deducting their airtime and giving them the same bundle the next day / week. But after 4 or 5 days / weeks, they may have a change mind – and want to opt out of being billed automatically – every day / week because their needs are no longer being met by the daily or 7 day data bundle.

The person may want to upgrade to a Safaricom All in One Bundle, a 30 day bundle, a 90 day bundle, Advantage Plus, Flex, Blaze or Platinum bundles. They may even want to rely entirely on Tunukiwa Internet Bundles.

That is where the Stop Autorenewal feature comes in.

Instead of trying to look for the data bundle you purchased and trying to fumble with various USSD codes to find how to stop Safaricom from deducting your airtime every day / week / month, you can just use the Stop Autorenewal feature by following the steps outlined below:

How to Stop Auto Renewal of Safaricom Data Bundles

  • Dial *544# on your feature phone, smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer (if using your SIM card in a modem or router)
  • Enter 98 to view more items on the menu
  • Select option 12: Stop Auto Renewal

OR

  • Dial *100#
  • Select option 2: Buy Data Bundles
  • Enter 98 to go to the next page on the menu
  • Select option 12: Stop Auto Renewal

OR

  • Dial *456#
  • Select option 1: Buy
  • Select option 3: Data Bundles
  • Enter 98 to view more items on the menu
  • Select option 12: Stop Auto Renewal

That is all.

Now you don’t need to worry about Safaricom renewing a data bundle (and deducting money from your airtime balance) for you if your intention was to use the Buy Once and not the Auto Renew option.

You don’t have to worry about monies you planned to use for other things (SMS Bundles, Calls or Tunukiwa Offers) leaving your line and finding their way into the telco’s coffers.

Just choose a method above, a USSD code of your choice, and stop any data bundles that currently have autorenewal set to active.
